Consumer Tape Formats

VHS Tape


VHS is the most popular and recognizable tape format. It also comes in a compact, camcorder sized form-factor (VHS-C) and a higher definition version (S-VHS).

8mm Video Tape

Video8 / Hi8 / Digital8

Video8, Hi8, and Digital8 are all formats that use an 8mm tape cassette. 8mm tapes were very popular for camcorders, and have a much longer running time than VHS-C tapes.

MiniDV Tape

MiniDV / HDV

MiniDV is a compact tape format that stores fully digital video data. It was the last format used in tape-based camcorders. HDV is a later, high-definition variant that uses the same MiniDV tape cassette.

DVD Disc


DVD (digital video disc) is a video storage medium that uses a laser, similar to a CD. They remain a very popular medium for playback to this day. They also come in a smaller, camcorder-sized form factor (MiniDVD) that is compatible with most DVD players.

Betamax Tape


Betamax (typically abbreviated Beta) is a consumer tape format that was at one time a popular competitor to the VHS tape during the 70’s and 80’s, but was almost entirely displaced by the more popular VHS format.

Umatic Tape


U-matic (or 3/4″ tape) was the first popular video cassette tape format and was introduced by Sony in 1971.

Betacam Tape

Betacam / Betacam SP

Betacam is a professional-grade video cassette format previously used extensively in the broadcast industry.



A professional digital video format offered by Sony based on the DV video format used in MiniDV cassettes. This format tends to be more durable and reliable than standard DV.



DVCPRO is a professional-level digital video tape medium developed by Panasonic that is a variant of DV video that was used in the electronic news industry.


Digital Betacam (or DigiBeta) is a fully digital Betacam variation heavily used in the broadcast industry.
